In the past couple of month we have had fewer and fewer issues with customer speeds.

Thank you for supporting Cherry Capital Connection, LLC while our network experienced growing pains. 

 

We want all customers to know how to keep their computers clean from viruses, to Spyware, and Ad-ware.  These programs will flood your connection and appear to be a problem with your speed.  Even a File Sharing program configured incorrectly, will create similar issues.

Anti Virus Programs

 

The big names in Antivirus software continue to be Norton, and McAfee home virus programs. Cherry Capital Connection, LLC has multiple examples of these programs working and multiple examples of these programs not working flawlessly.

   

    Example: A technician visited a customer's site who was experiencing a speed issue.  The customer had recently updated and scanned with Norton.

    Norton found the machine to be clean.  The connection to the customer was configured correctly, and the technician's laptop was connecting

    seamlessly to the internet.  The technician requested permission to install AVAST.  AVAST identified 17 viruses and 2 Trojans.

 

The problem is not necessary Norton, or any home virus program.  The program failed because of the way the scan was done.

 

Please employ a program which offers automatic updates to the software and virus definitions. As well as a BOOT level scan.

    Many viruses are capable of shutting down when they see a scan running.  By using a BOOT level scan, the virus can not hide.

 

CCC encourages each customer to employ Anti Virus software.  Use of Anti Virus software is a part of our Acceptable Use and Service policy.

 

We have found AVAST to be an excellent product.  Please find a their Residential product at http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html. 

    Business additions are also available.

 

MAC users will find they are most happy with VIREX available from McAfee available at http://www.shopmcafee.com.

 

Spyware & Ad-ware

 

The Internet is flooded with Spyware and Ad-ware.  It is impossible to avoid these problems.  Ads that offer Free Spyware & Ad-ware programs

should be avoided.  They are often tools to add their own infections to your machine.

 

Spyware and Ad-ware can open a connection to the Internet.  Increasing the amount of traffic over your connection and making your computer more vulnerable to virus attack and identity theft.

    Example:  A customer's machine had over 80 incoming and outgoing connections.  The customer was not aware of the connections.

 

CCC recommends 2 removal programs.  Both Lavasoft Adware and Spybots Search & Destroy are listed under Downloads.
